Since 2010, Be Medispa has been the Official Skincare Facility of the Miss Kentucky Pageant. As part of the sponsorship, Be Medispa gives a skincare presentation to the contestants competing for the title of Miss Kentucky. Its important to start a skincare regime at an early age in order to prevent or delay skin issues later in life. The Miss Kentucky candidates, though only in their teens and early 20s, are not too young to start taking serious care of their skin. Simple habits, applied over a lifetime, will garner great results.
Skincare Regime
Most basic skincare is simple and straightforward. First of all, drink at least 8 glasses of water each day. Dry skin has less resilience and is more prone to wrinkling. Plus, water helps rid the body and skin of toxins. Secondly, while you cant control your genetics, you can control the environmental factors that damage your skin. Smoking, for example, causes wrinkles to appear much faster than normal because it damages the skin. Alcohol, too, ages your skin. Alcohol is a natural diuretic, so it causes you to lose moisture from your skin, which can exacerbate fine lines, acne, and wrinkles. Making good lifestyle choices is an important part of lifelong skincare.
Then, you have proactive skincare such as making sure to wash your face before bed, especially if youre wearing makeup. Sleeping in your makeup can increase your exposure to free radicals, which can lead to collagen breakdown and prematurely aging skin. And of course, not removing foundation can definitely lead to majorly clogged pores and pimples. Last but not least, lets not forget the importance of sleep. A poor night of sleep can result is temporary dark bags under your eyes, but years of inadequate sleep can lead to more wrinkles. Sleep may be the closest thing we have to the fountain of youth.
Sunscreen
The foundation of any good skincare routine is SPF. Sunscreen is your first line of defense against the suns damaging UV rays. UV rays are one of the main culprits behind visible signs of aging. Both UVA and UVB rays cause our skin to age more rapidly than if we were to avoid the sun and use proper protection. If your skin is repeatedly exposed to sunlight without the necessary precautions, your skin loses its ability to repair itself. All that sun damage is cumulative, and your skin is like a daily diary of all your bad (and good) sun decisions.
Tanning
While its important to put on a daily SPF to protect your skin from the sun, its also important to avoid the tanning bed. Indoor tanning, just like the sunshine, exposes skin to harmful UV rays. Unfortunately, some people believe that tanned skin makes them look thinner, healthier, or more beautiful. People judged by these standards, especially young women and teenage girls, feel pressured to have a tanned appearance. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), people who begin tanning during adolescence or early adulthood have a higher risk of melanoma, the deadliest type of skin cancer. Even if cancer is avoided, tanning causes long term skin damage such as wrinkles and changes in texture. One of the the best way to protect yourself from skin cancer (and premature aging) is to limit your exposure to UV rays, whether they come from the sun or from man-made sources such as indoor tanning beds.
