Blu-U Photofacial Light Therapy is used to treat sunspots (as known as actinic keratosis), which are rough-textured, scaly patches on the skin that range in color from skin toned to reddish brown. Actinic keratosis is caused by excessive exposure to sunlight accumulated over time, so it appears most in people over the age of 40.
Sunspots are especially worrisome because they can progress to squamous cell carcinoma, the second most common skin cancer. Since you dont know which sunspots will stay benign and which will develop into cancer, its important to address all sunspot skin damage.
To treat sunspots, Blu-U is combined with the Levulan Kerastick, which is a topical solution applied directly to the sunspots. The sunspots absorb the solution and it makes the corresponding skin cells extremely sensitive to light. Then, the light therapy is administered and the combination of the Levulan Kerastick and the Blu-U destroys the sunspots cells. During the treatment, you may experience tingling, stinging, or prickling but the sensations should resolve shortly after the completed treatment.
Baseline After 12 Weeks
The 2-part, 2 office visit is completed in less than 24 hours. Patients should avoid sun exposure or prolonged light for at least 48 hours after the application of the Levulan Kerastick. Blu-U with Levulan treatment for actinic keratoses usually requires a minimum of two treatments with additional treatments based upon your response.
